Pool opening checklist

  1. Clear the cover and the deck. Remove leaves and debris before they fall into the water.
  2. Reconnect and check the equipment: pump, filter, heater and valves. Look for leaks or cracked parts.
  3. Fill the water to the middle of the skimmer opening.
  4. Run the pump and filter, skim, brush the walls and floor, and empty the baskets.
  5. Test the water: free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer (CYA). Correct pH and alkalinity first, then chlorine.
  6. Keep the filter running until the water is clear. Test again after a day.

Why does my pool turn green in spring?

Green water is almost always algae. It grows fast when chlorine is low, the water is warm and the filter has not been running enough. Test the water, brush, shock the pool and run the filter. Ask Blue for the exact amounts for your pool size, free.

Why is my pool water cloudy?

Cloudy water usually comes from low chlorine, high pH or a dirty filter. Test first, correct the chlorine and pH, then run the filter. Blue can read a photo of your water and give you a step-by-step plan.

When to call a pool company

Call a pro if the water stays green after a few days, if the pump or heater will not start, if you see a leak, or if you simply want it done for you. Some companies on Pool AI Pro offer emergency or same-day service.

Common questions

When should I open my pool?

Open it when the weather stays warm and before algae starts. Where pools run all year, treat spring as the time to check the equipment and rebalance the water.

How long does it take to clear a green pool?

It often takes several days of brushing, shocking and filtering. Heavy algae can take longer.

Do I need a pool opening service?

You can do it yourself with the checklist above, or hire a pool company if you prefer. Ask for a quote and say what you need.
